What do we see and treat in urgent care

Think of urgent care as being like a general practice, but they only assess and treat issues that need to be seen urgently, and can’t wait until the next day.

A definitive list of issues may not be possible, but here is a general list of conditions that would be appropriate for urgent care, conditions more appropriate for your GP clinic, and things that are best seen in the emergency department.

Issues treated in urgent care (when your GP is not available)

  • Minor cuts
  • Sprains or suspected fractures
  • Sports injuries
  • Minor infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Minor burns
  • Acute rashes
  • Insect or animal bites
  • Worsening cold, cough, or flu
  • Mild asthma attacks
  • Earaches
  • Fevers or chills

Issues you should see your regular GP for

  • Running out of medication
  • Medical certificates
  • Referral letters
  • Pathology or radiology requests
  • Mild or ongoing back pain
  • Eye issues that are mild without visual changes
  • Fever in adults if otherwise well
  • Flu-like symptoms if you are otherwise well
  • Post-operative issues without infection or bleeding
  • Urinary problems – but able to urinate
  • Workers compensation certificates
  • Wound infections if mild and otherwise well

Issues that need to be seen in the emergency department

  • Chest pain or chest tightness lasting more than 10 minutes
  • Sudden onset of weakness, numbness, or paralysis of the face, arm, or leg
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Unconsciousness
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • A sudden collapse or unexplained fall
  • Unexplained fitting (seizures)
  • Injury from a major car accident
  • A fall from a greater than 90cm height (or 5 stairs)
  • Serious assault, including stabbing or shooting
  • Severe burns, particularly young children
